Custom test case ID

Enable this feature to assign personalized, unique test case IDs during creation, import, or via API, replacing default IDs.

In BrowserStack Test Management, you have the flexibility to define custom test case IDs or retain the default system-generated IDs (e.g., TC-1, TC-2), ensuring uniqueness at the project level. This provides more personalized and organized testing experience, aligning with individual or organizational naming conventions.

  • The custom test case IDs feature can only be enabled for new Test Management accounts with no existing data.
  • Enabling custom test case IDs ensures project-level uniqueness, meaning each ID is unique within its project. This cannot be reverted to group-level IDs.

Enable custom test case IDs

To use custom test case IDs, this feature must be enabled for your account. Contact BrowserStack Support to activate this capability. Once enabled, you can assign unique custom test case IDs during creation, import, or via the API.

Assign custom test case IDs

You can assign custom test case IDs using the following methods:

  • User Interface (UI): When creating or editing a test case, enter your desired custom test case ID in the designated field.
  • API: Use the ‘identifier’ attribute in your API requests to set your custom test case ID. For more details, refer to the Test Management API documentation.
  • During Quick Import: When importing test cases from tools like Zephyr Scale, Xray, or qTest, ensure that your custom test case IDs are included in the import data to maintain consistency.

Important considerations

  • Uniqueness: Each custom test case ID must be unique within a project to prevent conflicts.
  • Visibility: Once assigned, the custom test case ID becomes the primary identifier visible across the UI and in all workflows, including filters and reports.
  • Tagging in Automation: You can tag test cases in your automation scripts using the assigned custom test case IDs for seamless integration and tracking. For guidance on test case ID tagging, refer to the Test Case ID Tagging documentation.

By leveraging custom test case IDs, you can enhance the traceability and management of your test cases, tailoring the identification system to better suit your project’s needs.
